The Minister of the Word, also referred to as the Reader or Lector, plays a vital role in proclaiming the sacred scriptures and universal prayer from the official liturgical book known as the lectionary. The church has an established Rite through which it formally commissions members of the faithful as Lectors.

Fr Ian organises training for readers . Training is necessary to ensure that prospective ministers are fully aware of the importance of the ministries and the seriousness with which they should be carried out.
